We are pleased to announce the publication of an interdisciplinary, English-language volume by the staff of the Institute of History at the University of Opole, edited by prof. Marcin Böhm, and published by the University of Opole Press.
Between Clio and Calliope: In Clio’s Arms, ed. Marcin Böhm, Opole: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Opolskiego, 2024, pp. 206 (ISBN: 978-83-8332-095-3).
Ancient Greece forms the foundation of European cultural and historical identity, which is evident in many areas of life – from religion and mythology to science and art. Terms such as “history,” “philosophy,” and “museum” have Greek origins, and the Muses – Clio (history) and Calliope (philosophy) – served as inspiration for the authors of this volume.
The collection features English-language articles written by staff members of the Institute of History at the University of Opole. The texts are interdisciplinary in nature and cover topics ranging from ancient times to modern and contemporary history, as well as philosophical reflections. The articles are arranged alphabetically by the authors’ last names rather than thematically, which better reflects the broad range of their research interests.
The topics covered include, among others:
- an analysis of parliamentary resolutions establishing patrons of the year in Poland in the 21st century (prof. Marek Białokur),
- the history of the board game “Nine Men’s Morris” (prof. Marcin Böhm and PhD Magdalena Przysiężna-Pizarska),
- the Promethean myth in the works of Terry Pratchett (prof. Marcin Böhm),
- the handwritten newsletters of Jędrzej Kitowicz (prof. Tomasz Ciesielski),
- the 1953 popular uprising in the GDR and its impact on the German minority in Poland (prof. Adriana Dawid),
- ostatnie dni Hitlera w filmie Der Untergang (dr hab. Adriana Dawid, prof. UO),
- the moral status of animals in the context of John Rawls’s theory of justice (prof. Grzegorz Francuz),
- the role of historical comics in education (PhD Bartłomiej Janicki),
- the revival of the Benedictine Order in the 19th century (prof. Antoni Maziarz),
- the community of Alcoholics Anonymous in the context of the idea of commonwealth (PhD Marcin Pietrzak),
- the genealogy of Kraków’s mayor Erazm Tłokiński (d. 1587) (prof. Magdalena Ujma).
The volume is a tribute to the inspiration drawn from Greek heritage and showcases the diversity of the authors’ scholarly interests.
